We all have the right to reproduce!

Why are there so many animals in rescue centres?

Christmas has just been and many people would of got a pet for a present; How many of those will be re-homed or dumped before next Christmas comes? This time of year most rescue centres won’t let people adopt animals as they know all too well that a majority of them will be returned as the new owners can’t cope or didn’t realise what a responsibility their new pet would be.

More and more animals are being found dumped in the streets, kittens in boxes, puppies wandering aimlessly alone, they are all left to suffer and die without a thought from the owners. It's symptomatic of our throw-away society that ever more people care more for themselves than others. Part of the reason for there being unwanted dogs is that there are not more people who keep their dogs for life.

The question this would make most people ask is; why are you letting your animal reproduce?

Yes it is expensive to get a dog spayed or castrated but if you get your animal from a rescue centre it would of been done already and if they are not old enough to have the operation at the time of adoption you should receive a discount on the procedure or the centre would do it for free when the dog is old enough.

Is the breed of dog really that important?

Many people will search the internet for that perfect pooch and be willing to pay hundreds for it mainly based on appearance, but do they really research the breed? So many dogs are bread because they look cute and are wanted for shows so the owners can get that illusive 1st place ribbon. But what price do the dogs pay? Yes they are groomed beyond anything you could expect but then they are placed in a crate and carted for hours to the shows, left in a crate and groomed again! All a dog wants to do is play, chase things, and please their owner.

How many of these dogs are abandoned or re-homed because their owner didn’t know enough about the breeds characteristics?

So many people don’t read up about the breed of dog they are getting, If they buy a puppy it’s because they like the look or reputation of breed but yet do not realise the training and hard work involved in getting that puppy to be a well behaved obedient dog.

A lot of people will go to a rescue centre which is fantastic that they are trying to give a dog a second chance and a loving home but they see a cute dog want it and the older ones often get left behind, the dog gets to its new home and starts to settle in and show its natural behaviour the new owners don’t know how to deal with it and it goes back to the kennels.

sadly, thousands of dogs have to be put down each year for want of a home and, meanwhile, the profit culture of society allows more in-breeding of dogs which can be sold for big money.

So if you consider getting a dog please think of those waiting in the rescue centres that are desperate to be a part of a family, if you find one you like read up on its temperament and be sure it’s right for you.
